what the blog?!

It's been a long time since I last blogged. Long enough to wonder how to do it.

Here is a post that I started, but didn't finish till I decided to let Noah crawl all over the computer room to let me get it done today!

We are in TX, and I have learned that Irving is a very boring city, esp. when compared to where we were - in Austin, TX. Our cell-phone plan updates brought us here- giving us Free***** tickets. Like when the ticket is free after however many inconveniences and fees. No matter, we have had a great time. We got to stay with my blogging friend, Kelly and her husband, Austin. DH and Kelly are close to the same age, and were childhood comrades playing Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys together.

I hadn't realized how nice it is to travel and stay with friends. It was so much better than us staying in a hotel somewhere surrounded by strangers. It was so nice to hang out with them at the end of the day, eat with them, watch tv with them, etc. Noah had a great time playing with their toys (they are a kid-less home) like a silicon basting brush, a salon gift card for a place in Duluth, and a Rudy's BBQ cup.
Tonight I was thinking about how I missed them- and being there, which I suppose will make me readier for home than I would be otherwise.

While we were traveling the great city of Austin we found so many things:
-Zilker Park and Barton Springs- a spring that can be swam in across the st. from the wonderful Botanic Gardens
-The Gardens included a large herb garden, Japanese garden, children's garden, cactus and succulents, rose, woodland areas, and the best of all The Hartman Prehistoric that is akin to the Jurassic Park scenes.
-Kelly's Spanish meal- Our great host with ehr DH Austin, like the city:) sauteed potatos and onions, with egg that didn't turn out how she wanted due to changes in the recipe to upsize it for 4 people
-Flip happy Crepes- Carmelized banana, and vanilla and chantilly cream with berries
-Cornucopia-gourmet popcorn, smores, caramel, and green apple
-Teo's Espresso and Gelato with the Texican Vanilla that DH LOVED and the affogato that I loved 2x's- espresso and gelato combined
-Whole Food Market's flagship store- parmesan artichoke crab and shrimp soup, lobster bisque
-Amy's ice cream- PB Crunch
-Big Top Candy store where I had a shave ice of Tiger's blood, and wedding cake flavors
-Salt Lick BBQ where the brisket was soft enough for babies to eat it- we know, we tried! He loved it
-Smoked gouda and bacon quiche with a french-style salad with dijon vinaigrette, and tomato bread- a Spanish dish of hot bread
-Sushi from the outlet mall that wasn't too bad
-Sonic snacks and drinks- Limeades 2x's so far
-Brick Oven gourmet pizza with pesto, sun-dried tomatoes, and a gorgonzola, cranberry mixed green salad

We found it a more arduous task to find fun in Irving and Dallas. We found that Grapevine, TX might have some fun shopping in the day- but it was nice to just find somewhere to walk before sundown. We wandered around there for a bit, and the highlight that I found was a bunch of ultra-geeks playing some type of geeky board games involving rulers and small figurines. It felt like I had stumbled upon a secret man lair- indeed we had. I was a girl spying in the other's territory. I was with DH and baby- both males- so I felt that gave me a free pass to this show.

We also saw Longhorn cattle- that was the first I'd seen of them thus far. They were outside an exclusive-looking resort and convention center called Gaylord Texan. They may have been just novelty to make the resort look more "Texan."

Today we visited the Farmer's Market in Dallas, and I had roated corn served in a cup. It was covered in squeeze-butter and Kraft parmesan cheese from the green shake-out can, but it was surprisingly good still. After finding our way out of the ghetto-y areas we made our way to Fort Worth to the Gallery ArtCafe. I had a Macadamia nut mocha that was definitely more mocha than mac nut, but still fairly good. It wasn't the Teo affogato that I had back in Austin, but it was decent.

While we were there we learned about the "Art Goggle" in the southside area. I would compare it to the Art Crawl of St. Paul. We had some time to pass, since it didn't start till 5, and we went to the Botanic Gardens and Conservatory in the meantime. That was a great place despite the cold wintery feeling blowing wind. The conservatory had a few flowering tropical plants, some fish and some birds. I took some pretty floral pictures. Outside we had a lengthy walk, aiming to make the most of the gardens while the weather though cold was still warmer than the MN weather.

After the gardens we visited the Goggle. It was a revitalization effort, and as a result multiple businesses in the area were each hosting a local artist while having a business open-house style event with free wine and cheese. It was quite a popular event and a creative idea. The yarn store Jennings Street Yarns was open late as a result and I bought some pretty nordic colorway yarn that was orange, pink, magenta, and various other pretty bright colors.

Later that night we hunted for some tasty fare, and were met with either closed restaurants or super busy ones with long lines at 8pm. We tried for RJ's, a Mexican place recommended by SIL, but there was a long line of people standing outside on the steps. Instead we settled for Chickfil-A in a suburb by a mall. Turned out that we all liked it, even Noah.

The next day was leaving day- which we delayed by a lengthy scenic drive around and around like a merry-go-round checking out all the angles and cardinal directions of the DFW Airport. I decided DSW is much more exciting than that. It took DH a few tries to get to the rental car return, and we all all quite relieved to make it there.

It could have been that we were burned out on traveling, or else DFW just wasn't exciting. The latter is what we decided to go with. So, Austin rocks, DFW is not our kind of place especially with cold windy weather without a handknit sweater.

Before travel I'd envisioned TX as a hot desert, ala the Gila Monster story on Reading Rainbow, and after TX I realized it was more like MN than unalike, at least with that weather!

We came home and it felt warmer here, than how we'd left TX! And the sun was shining. So, needless to say, we were glad to be home!

His cousin will be 1 this Thursday, and so both boys were eating "real"

took a really long nap. I got a lot of knitting time in, since I didn't want
to take him outside to the car and have him wake up too early.

responding to requests

Seems like there are a lot of demands on my time now. Genevieve had her ACL repaired last Tuesday and can only go outside on a leash, and accompanied by someone. In the day, that person is me. What a time of the year to need this kind of help, when it's freakishly cold out. Buster, has been conveniently relocated next door. Our neighbors are watching him for a few weeks to allow Gen a chance to recover. Last week DH and I were sick with a nasty virus, and are well now.

I'm working on Christmas knitting, and other Christmas related projects in the meantime. Also have been playing Little Big Planet on Dh's PS3. And of course, taking care of Noah!

I've been told to update my blog, so here it is. Enjoy! And Merry Christmas in case I don't update again till later!

We, meanwhhile, have been working hard at getting him out of the king-sized
bed. For whatever reason, he seems to prefer our bed. It's like goldilocks
and the 3 bears, who's been sleeping in my/our bed? Noah has. First, it was
because we would fall asleep and he'd stay longer then expected. Then, he
had a nasty cold that seemed to abate only in our bed, and to worsen
suddenly causing all kinds of congestion, while in his crib. Then, DH and
baby fell down the steps together (no one was seriously hurt, Thanks God),
and we were told to sleep in the same room as him for 2 nights to keep an
eye on him. So he had a 2 night free pass. And so on. Last night I tried for
over 3 hours to get him to sleep in his crib, and he ended up back in our
bed. Oh well.

It was just for a little bit, under supervision till we gave him a toy to chew on instead. Joel held Noah for most of the duration of this party. Lots of other people held him, and Noah was as calm and mellow as can be whenever he was held.

Hey! Help me here!

Can someone help me pick up all the letters I spilled?! We went to the Elf show at Macy's with cousin Tyler, and both boys marveled at the lights and colors. I really liked the artsy touch of the Tromp l'oeil painting the spilled letters on the floor.

ear infection number one

He hasn't even been fussy, but I took him in to the DR.'s to have his lungs listened to. They're fine, but he has an ear infection. I had to give my baby medicine tonight- amoxicillin. He didn't like it and spit most of it out. It makes him smell like medicine. I can't wait till he can smell like my baby. I can see why people shouldn't touch wild baby animals, since their mom rejects them when they smell like humans. I want Noah to smell like Noah. Of course I have a super-sniffer so I'm sure I'm the only one who notices.

Note to everyone- stay away from my baby if your nose is running or you have a cough! This goes for kids and adults.

This will be a fun next 9 days while the medicine needs to run its course. And DH was home sick today.

In knitting news- things on the needles are:
  • blue aran-style mongram cable sweater for baby
  • sock 3 of the toe-ups to replace the lost one
  • tulip toes
  • versatility
These are just the active needles-
inactive projects are:
  • monkey
  • monkey socks from Cookie A.
  • a felted fish
  • bird toy from berrocco site
  • bulky acrylic little girl sweater
I think that sums it up, but what knitter doesn't have lurking UFO's?

wanted additional family members to help take care of my family

A week ago Sunday I was sick- and slept all day. I'm still getting over the nose-blowing phase of my cold. A few days before I got sick Noah had a cold, and now DH has lost his voice. Noah, too, is getting over the raspy chest and coughing phase. And now DH is going to bed early to try to get rid of whatever he has. I think Noah might be teething, too. He was spitting like a motorboat on Saturday, and vigorously shoving everything under the sun into his mouth. He's chewing on his fingers a lot.

Noah just slept for an hour and a half- and is now awake. I'm feeling tired already. I think I am in for it.

We just need all our family members here to get well at the same time- and then stay well for at least a few weeks. Is that too much to hope for? Oh, did I mention that Buster has an itchy belly from his fall allergies? Weaselpop is fine, and in sassy spirits. At least she's well.

a sad knitting story, grab the kleenexes

You know I have been knitting right? That's how I LOST my sock. I lost sock number one when I was 1/2 an inch away from completing sock number two. I called countless places to see if it had been found, and drove and walked around looking for the sock. I even prayed for the sock to miraculously appear, or for divine intervention to give me wisdom to find the sock. Like Mark Driscoll the Mars Hill pastor says, "God always answers pray with a yes, no or maybe."

I didn't find the sock. It was completely done, the tails even woven in ( a chore I dread). Good news is that Three Kittens Needle Arts (which is now cool and in the new part of Mendota Heights) said they had 1 skein. Just right for me. I got there and they found another skein. Then I found another on the shelf and bought 3 skeins of sock yarn- to knit 2 pairs of sock. Go figure. What a knitting tragedy. I haven't been motivated to finish the second sock since the wind went out of my sails but tomorrow at SnB Noah permitting, I will finish the cast off and weave in the tails and sock 2 will be done. Then all I have to do is cast on number one. Again.

Have any other knitters had this happen to them? Any tips for prevention? Other than not dragging my knitting everywhere I go. I thought about safety pinning the socks to each other, or keeping one at home in a safe place, and writing down the knitting measurements on the pattern so I don't have to compare the second sock to the first to complete it. Blah. I really don't want to cast on another toe-up all stockinette sock.

I guess I can be happy I found the yarn to make another one after calling 4 local yarn stores, and that it was at the store closest to my house. And that it was Regia instead of some luscious handpainted merino yarn like some others I have stashed. Not that Regia is bad, it's good since I can wash this kind and it is full of pretty spring colors like spring green and pink and blue. The irony is that I told DH I wanted 2 more skeins of it, since I wanted to knit another pair of socks from it. That was before the loss. Now I get to knit 1.5 pairs.

I decided that my sock is not actually lost, but a really grateful woman with one leg and a passion for colorful handknit socks found it, and is wearing it with pride. I'm right, right?

oopss

Wow- I tried to use technology to make my blogging easier. I really didn't mean to post the same post next to each pic of the Gingerbread House. I thought it would have sent as a batch with one blog entry. I know I, as the blogging author, have the capacity to delete those extra posts and save the pics, but I figured I'd just leave it. Maybe more of you will go to the Gingerbread House now:) It's in Rochester, MN, did I mention that yet?

And the reason why we're still up...

Baby just had to poo, and boy did he ever from the sounds of that. Time to
change him!

Gingerbread House. It was a really cute bakery filled with yummy things.
What really caught my eye was this, it is in the Guinness Book of World
Records for making and baking the World's Largest gingerbread man! It was so
cool to see pictures of the whole process. A family member knew how to make
cast iron molds and made a huge cookie cutter, and they baked the cookie in
stages. My friend made the dough for this big monster. And it cooked in this
oven. If you are anywhere near Rochester check it out and indulge yourself
in all their goodies. You won't regret it. And eat some cinnamon apple bread
for me. It's almost worth moving there. Almost.

It's 5am now and he wasn't ready to go back to sleep, so here we are. He is
in his Kick n' Play bouncer, and I am at the keyboard. At least he's in

Did I mention that he shared his cold with me? In the middle of the night on

headache. Today was much improved, but a good night's sleep would have been
nice still.

Giving up Grey's

Last week I watched the Grey's Anatomy season premiere with anticipation, albeit on Saturday morning instead of Thursday night. I was watching some of the Office on Thursday and at Caribou for the rest with my friend Elzbieta. There was live music there, by the way. It was an older gentleman playing saxaphone.

It was baby N's first exposure to the sax, and he seemed to like it well enough.
Hearing it brought back memories of junior high when I played my Grandma's silver sax for "my instrument." I remember the day when each of us students was called to the music individually, so that the 2 music teachers could help you select "your instrument." I guess it was mandatory to play something for a year at least, after having the year or two of the "recorder" the silly little beige plastic thing that could make wonderful squawking sounds when played by an early learner.

Anyway, back to Grey's. So, I watched it, and I watched my sleeping baby more. I realized that it had lost its luster for me. There's something about women liking women in that way, or all the promiscuity that makes me drop watching a show. I didn't like Will and Grace for the same reason. So, there's my rant. I also gave up "Three and a Half Men" since I got sick of the glorified promiscuity. I just don't need to be watching those kinds of things, when I have the best thing already. The endless baby show. I watched my belly hop around from here to there as he did somersaults in utero, and now having been pushed out into the big world, I still savor every moment of watching him. Whether he's sleeping with his little sleep smiles and squinty faces, or awake smiling, cooing, laughing or saying "ma" and "mom" it all is so much more enjoyable and special than any tv shows.

Got to go, the baby is crying for his milky.

Hi from Baby Noah

Another blogger friend sent me to this link, I went there and was surprised that I had knit with her friend before, too cool.

1. Cloth or disposable? Disposable, I prefer the Ecodiapers from Target
2. Breast or bottle? Breast is best, all the way. Then a nap on Mommy's lap when my tummy is full.
3. Eczema or reflux? What does milk coming out of my nose mean?
4. Jumparoo or play mat? Play mat, with the Rainforest animals.
5. Mommy or Daddy? Both. Mommy is good for the bulk of the day, but then it is Daddy time.
6. Sling, front carrier, or stroller? Ergo baby carrier, or stroller.
7. Pacifier or thumb? How about whole fist, followed by WubbaNub the penguin.
8. Bumbo seat or bouncy seat? Bouncy
9. White noise or silence while sleeping? Crazy corgi sounds and the intermittent squabbling cats mixed with quiet
10. Crib, Pack'n'Play, or parents' bed? first the crib, then the crib, then the king-sized bed for the morning feeding

ravelry is such a time suck!

My ravelry name is "corgiknit"- and I have been listing my stash. Still not done with it yet, but close.

Meme "Stolen" from Yogurt and granola

I had to follow Yogurt and Granola's lead on this and ask my husband these questions- it looked fun to interview him.

Me:
What is your favorite thing about my knitting?
DH: I get sweaters and it keeps you busy.

Me: What is your least favorite thing about my knitting?
Dh: Sometimes you obsess and neglect other things.

Me: What is something I have knitted, that you recall as good?
Dh: My sweater.

Me: Do you think knitters have an expensive hobby?
Dh: Huuhh, it depends on what you compare it to. It can be.

Me: Do you have any hobbies?
Dh: Hmmm...long pause...play basketball, read, video games.

Me: So, if we compared money/time spent on hobbies, who would win?
Dh: What does win mean? If it means who spends the most, you win hands down.

Me: Do you have a stash of any kind?
Dh: Just of cash.

Me: Have I ever embarrassed you, knitting in public?
Dh: No.

Me: Do you know my favorite kind of yarn?
Dh: I know you like Colinette Point 5, that's it? I can talk about Koigu, you just got some Cherry Tree Hill, you like anything that is colorful.

Me: Can you name another knitting blog?
Dh: Scoffs, yes. Didn't ask me to name it, just asked if I could. Yarn Harlot, Glampyre Knits, Beth's Blue Room, Lime n' Violet...etc.

Me: Do you mind my wanting to stop at yarn shops wherever we go?
Dh: Not usually.

Me: Do you understand the importance of a swatch?
Dh: Yes.

Me: Do you read Knitting Corgis?
Dh: Yes.

Me: Have you ever left a comment?
Dh: Mmm...I don't know, maybe.

Me: Do you think the house would be cleaner if I didn't knit?
Dh: No. You'd find something else to do.

Me: Anything you'd like to add?
Dh: Not if I know what's good for me.
